Why is teeth whitening needed?
Over the years, teeth collect deposits and superficial stains which cause them to appear yellowish. Teeth also discolour with age as the enamel thins. This exposes the layer underneath, called dentin, which is naturally yellow.
If you have ever wanted a whiter smile, you may already be familiar with the traditional method of teeth whitening, which uses a high concentration of hydrogen peroxide.
However, here at FY Smile, we use a system called PAP+ teeth whitening.
What is PAP+ teeth whitening?
PAP+ teeth whitening is an alternative to traditional teeth whitening that whitens your tooth shade effectively without using hydrogen peroxide and without any harm to the health of your teeth.
There is almost no sensitivity. Unlike traditional whitening, you won’t get any uncomfortable ‘zingers’ after treatment is over.
The results you achieve in-chair are the ones you will enjoy over a longer period of time. Unlike traditional whitening, your teeth are not dehydrated post-treatment, leaving an illusion that can fade after a few days.
How does PAP+ teeth whitening work?
First of all, what is PAP? Short for Phthalimidoperoxycaproicacid, PAP is an organic peracid that breaks down staining in your tooth enamel to brighten its colour.
The PAP+ teeth whitening process takes place in four steps:
- Phthalimidoperoxycaproicacid (PAP) enters through the layer of enamel in your teeth and breaks down molecules that hold colour
- Hydroxyapatite redeposits lost minerals into your teeth
- Potassium citrate decreases the activity level of your dental sensory nerves
- Your gum tissue is not affected by the process
